I discovered another non-profit interior design team called Dignity for Design. This Chicago-based group and affiliate of the Heartland Alliance, seeks to “heal through design.” As a network of donors, designers, and architects, Designs for Dignity redesigns nonprofit offices and spaces that serve basic needs, bringing design sensibility and a sense of home to under-represented places. Designs for Dignity has worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters, St. Vincent DePaul, and more, and recently has redesigned spaces for Chicago’s Lakeview Food Pantry (pictured above).
It’s so inspirational to see artist, architects, and designers donate their time to make a positive change in their local context. When design happens for worthy people we all win!
Check out their website for more information and read this article about Dignity for Design in one of my favorite publications Interior Design magazine.

We want to celebrate the launch of a new home renovation non-profit called Makeover Memphis headquatered in Memphis, Tennessee. We were excited to work with founder Brooke Greene to help start this amazing initiative. From the Makeover Memphis website:
“Makeover Memphis exists to transform hearts and homes in our city. We want to bless families, individuals and organizations that are making a difference and serving their communities by helping to make their home a haven. A small way of showing appreciation for selfless service and love. If you know anyone that could be blessed with a home makeover and is serving in our city, let us know. Send suggestions to makeovermemphis@gmail.com“

If you are in the Memphis area, please consider getting involved and supporting this great group. Check out their website ( www.MakeoverMemphis.com ) for pics and videos.
Design Stars helps a paraplegic

This was a very special project for Design Stars. Last November, Leah was hit by a car and almost lost her life. Waking up two months later, she now had to adjust to life without the use of her legs. Not only did Design Stars get to renovate a bedroom space but we were able to provide hope for Leah as she adjusts to her new life as a paraplegic. It was an honor to do this for her and you can tell by her reaction that she was quite moved.
Besides the decorations, her lights have been fully automated with remote, an intercom system was installed, and a brand new closet system was put in t accommodate her new needs. Way to go Design Stars team!

Dear Design Stars,
I want to thank you all for venturing out of the OC and coming to Covina to help my friend. Leah’s spirit and attitude when she wakes up each morning is now one of hope. Her beautiful room has warmed her heart with the feeling of love from so many that didn’t even know her. Leah now smiles anticipating when she can get back out in the world and meet more people that will love and accept her for the way she is.You all did a fantastic job with Leah’s bedroom and we all had so much fun while you were there. Your team is wonderful and you worked so well together. What they accomplished in just one day was just amazing. I also want to thank all the generous donors who made this project possible.
With much appreciation,
Sue A. Savarase (friend in black shirt above)

Help Design Stars win a grant for $50K

Hello friends, fans, and followers of Design Stars,
We have an amazing opportunity that just started June 1st. Design Stars has been accepted into the Pepsi Refresh Project. You can now ‘vote’ daily for DS among the many other projects listed. By the end of the month, if Design Stars is in the top ten, we will be granted $50K to go toward an entire ‘neighborhood extreme makeover’! Imagine, doing 10-12 homes in a neighborhood in need in Orange County. Powered by 100s of volunteers, not only would it beautify the community but bring an entire neighborhood together.
However, it’s going to take a collective effort to make this happen. If you follow the link, do the simple log in (name and e-mail), and vote EACH DAY till June 3oth. You can only vote once a day till the end of the month. I believe we can make this dream turn into reality and make a difference in our community.
Thank you for your support and help us by forwarding this to your friends, family, and like-minded world changer!
