Design brings healing

Sandee and I spent the morning visiting with our next Design Stars recipient. This past November, Leah (44) was walking to the bank right across the street from her Covina apartment. While crossing the street she was suddenly hit by a car. Landing 65 feet away from the point of impact, she sustained massive life-threatening injuries. Struggling to survive, Leah underwent multiple surgeries to repair her shattered body. Waking up two month later, she now had to grip with the reality that she would never walk again.
As you can imagine, the past few months have been difficult on Leah and her family. Adjusting to this new life would easily be overwhelming and discouraging for even the strongest spirits. However, Leah is a fighter. I was really touched with her ability to adapt and to accept this new harsh reality with a smile on her face. Each day presents a new sets of challenges to navigate- changing clothes, brushing teeth, turning on a lamp. etc. She is convinced she will bounce back, better AND stronger than ever. It really put my own ‘problems’ in perspective.
We feel privileged to get a chance to redesign and renovate her small bedroom. Her whole life in now confined to a 10′ x 12′ world. It’s more like a prison cell then bedroom. Eventually she will be more mobile but until then, Design Stars can help create an environment that is not only inspirational but can serve her various practical needs. In terms of scope, this is one of our smaller projects, however in terms of impact this will be one of our biggest. We are so excited to help craft an experience where design can meet tangible needs. Our prayer; while she might not ever be able to walk again, hopefully her new room will help her to fly.

Even with the Nixon project next week, we made time to visit with Eli Home yesterday as we planned the next Design Stars makeover for April 23rd-25th. Eli Home is a phenomenal organization based in Anaheim, CA created to help ‘break the chain of child abuse’ by providing ’safe homes’ for mothers in need. Eli’s main home in Orange has great space but is in desperate need of inspiration and color. We will be redesigning the main living and dining room space in preparation for a Mother’s Day celebration at the home. This will be a great chance Design Stars to love these mothers and their children as they start over in life.

Pepsi is running a huge campaign called The Pepsi Refresh Project. It’s a way to submit community changing initiatives and to vote for the ones to receive a grant to help support it. Eli Home is a phenomenal organization in Anaheim, CA created to help ‘break the chain of child abuse’ by providing ‘safe homes’ for mothers in need. The home renovation initiative that I work with called Design Stars is working on one of their homes in April. From Pepsi, the top 10 voted on by the end of March wins a generous grant. Out of a thousand submissions, Eli Home is #5 and could win $25K to go towards home renovations!
Please consider taking a moment to vote for this worthy cause. The three homes and thrift store that Eli supports gives many abused women and children a new start in life. They are a great organization and I have enjoyed working with them. Your vote can change lives forever.

Schedule:
Friday: 9am -8pm (video shoot at 8am)
Saturday: 8am-8pm*
Sunday: 8am-5pm (reveal at 4pm)
*There will be some work outside so wear a hat or sunscreen!
