Nixon Project Video

Thanks Wetink!

Special thanks to Wetink Printing for donating a great photo of our work in progress to the Nixon Home. They also printed an extra for Newsong. It’s hanging in hall near the HUB. Visit Wetink at: www.wetinkprinting.com

Thank you from the Nixon’s

To Design Stars,
From the deepest places of gratitude Rachael, Ryan, Maya and I would like to thank all of you that poured your time, talents and treasures into creating a work of art out of our house. Through your labor a space was created that will rejuvenate our souls as a family as well as welcome our friends and neighbors into an environment void of violence, anger, stress and pain. Rachael and I marvel at how much was done in such a short period of time. Being a family that does our own home renovation projects, the skill, time, and money required to do a project of this magnitude is not lost on us. We deeply appreciate the HUGE out pouring of love through this act of compassion. We would like to thank our friends that know us and cared for our family by working on our house. We would also like to thank Newsong, both Irvine and North Orange County, for choosing us, gathering the resources, both materials and people and for providing an awesome party to celebrate our redesigned home. We would like to give a heart-felt thanks to those of you that we do not even know. The fact that you would spend time working on someone else’s house that you do not know is beyond touching. Lastly we would like to thank Tony Kim and the rest of the designers for lending your gifts to bless our family. Although all the spaces were beautifully crafted our bedrooms have brought us particular joy and comfort. Peace to you all and thank you again for loving our family in this way.

PS: A special thanks to Angie Pang who had the idea to connect our family and story with CWOW Design Stars

Nixon House: Close ups

The Nixon’s homecoming

Here is the moment when the Nixon’s returned home after being gone for three days. Their family and friends gathered to celebrate their lives and their newly renovated home. (Thanks Fred for the great pics!)

Painting for Solidarity

For each of the home renovations of Design Stars, I do a custom painting to add a personal touch to the project. In our last project, the Nixon’s started a non-profit called Solidarity so I wanted to create art inspired from the logo. Painting a personalized piece for each home is one of my favorite parts of Design Stars. It’s something unique that I can contribute and it leaves a ‘fingerprint’ of our work there. My desire is that this painting can serve to encourage them during tough times and remind them of hope as they impact lives in their community.

Nixon House: The Girl’s Room

Here are the work in progress pics of the girl’s room for the Nixon house. I met Leslie Genchi of Genchi Design Group through Twitter. She responded to my promo and wanted to get involved. She did a great job and we really enjoyed working with her.

Leslie, the designer for the room, thought of the idea of installing lattice for the newly painted ceiling.

Custom made bed canopies, curtains, and tea table completed this extreme makeover.

Thank you Leslie Genchi for volunteering for this project. You can visit her website at: www.genchidesign.com.

Day 3: The Reveal!

Wow, what an amazing conclusion of another Design Stars! It came down to the wire but the Sunday volunteers pulled it through. Some of the stats from the weekend:

  • 3 days to do this project
  • 8 spaces (including the front yard)
  • 5 designers
  • 70+ volunteers
  • 11 trips to Lowe’s
  • And 22 garbage bags of earth and trash

A ton of friends and family came to celebrate the Nixon’s new home. It was great experience as some shared and gave thanks for the Nixon family. Tommy and Rachel were blown away by the reveal. Afterwards we had a big cookout and enjoyed the rest of the evening. Before the video is produced, here are a few of the ‘before and after’ pics of the project.

The Living Room

The Kitchen

The Dining Room

The Office Nook

The girl’s room (3 years & 18 months)

The Master Bedroom was a bonus surprise room!

Another bonus was a ton of landscape features like this trellis

We still need to take photos of the little girls rooms and the bathroom so check back soon. Special thanks for all the friends, fans, and supporters of Design Stars (the meals and snacks were phenominal!). We couldn’t have done it without you. More pics to come and the video will also air soon.

Day 2: More photos

The ‘stars’ of Design Stars are the myriad of volunteers that serve so unselfishly and without recognition. Thank you all, you inspire and lead us all. Without you Design Stars would not be possible!

Design Stars: Day 2

This was our most productive ‘day 2′ of any of our makeovers yet! A great group of volunteers arrived at the crack of dawn to carry on the work from yesterday’s crew. By mid day there were 40+ volunteers crammed in and around the house! At this point, I can’t show you pics of the interiors until the big reveal tomorrow at 4. Day 3 will be mainly cleaning and final touches. Please come out at 4 to celebrate the day and to encourage the Nixons.

There was some crazy Earth moving projects all day long…

Jo Phan led a team that fed the small army of volunteers each day.

I’m working on a painting inspired by the Solidarity logo for the living room.
